Best Breakfast Taco

  • Fonda Nolita

267 Elizabeth St., nr. Houston St. 917-727-0179

Most every corner bodega in these parts serves a passable egg-and-cheese on a roll, but chances are you’ve never had a proper breakfast taco. It’s a wholly different animal than the overflowing breakfast burrito, and one generally misunderstood outside of certain cities in Mexico and Texas. To remedy that, we suggest hightailing it down to Fonda Nolita, where each day from 8 a.m. onward you can dig into chorizo or nopales varieties of the morning snack. The standout is the housemade chorizo with organic eggs, stewed peppers and onions, plus a deep-red guajillo-chile sauce, stuffed into a locally made flour tortilla. (Tortilleria Nixtamal’s corn tortillas can be had by request.) With its matchsticked-radish garnish and generously portioned filling, it’s as hearty as an egg-and-cheese, but much more artfully presented and complexly delicious.
