Best Parent-Kid Activity

  • Veterans & Rookies

Chelsea Piers Field House, Pier 62; 212-336-6500

Kids love this multi-piered sports and rec center. Duh. But Veterans & Rookies at Chelsea Piers is a new class that gets parents on the playing field as well. In 90-minute, noncompetitive sessions, parents can join kids ages 5 to 10 in learningor brushing up ona variety of basic sports skills. Instructors are on hand not only to teach the kids but also to help mom and dad become better coaches themselves. A lot of parents want to teach, says co-instructor Joe Wagner, but they end up teaching using old techniques. Depending on the week, there are dribbling drills, batting practice, floor-hockey skills, volleyball serves, and even turns at the boxing bag. The class is $450 for the semester; for the finale, everyone hits the rock-climbing wall.
