Contrary to popular belief, made-to-order furniture does not have to cost a small fortune. Averse to self-promotionfour-year-old Recycled didn’t even have a proper website till a few weeks agothis reasonably priced furniture outfit, made up of brothers Matt and Steve Loftice and their crew of eight carpenters, specializes in rustic-modern coffee ($300) and dining ($700) tables from salvaged fir floor beams. If you don’t have room for the standard 6-foot-by-2 3/4-foot dining-room table, they’ll shrink it to any height or width and subtract the cost accordingly. And if you fall in love with that salvaged-oak-and-concrete credenza on the website ($1,650), Matt can finagle a cheaper version: fir instead of oak, nonadjustable shelves, slightly smaller dimensions, and voilàa one-of-a-kind piece for $900. Though they’ve typically got about 100 projects lined up at any time, a six-to-eight-week turnaround is guaranteed, plus free delivery from their studio in Red Hook to the far corner of your fifth-floor walk-up.
