As more and more people eschew traditional wallpaper for coverings made from delicate linen and beading, Eliot Cohen has earned a name in the interiors world as the man with the golden hands. Though designers (Victoria Hagan) and hoteliers (André Balazs) call on him to plaster mother-of-pearl tile on their ceilings and green Ultrasuede in their closets, he prefers smaller jobs in private residences, like covering an Upper East Side bathroom with velvet-flocked fabric. Cohen, who learned the trade 40 years ago apprenticing for a family friend, uses an eggbeater to mix a super-adhesive paste that he then applies to walls (or doors or stairs) with a China-bristle brush. Clients provide the material of their choice, be it embossed linoleum or wood veneer, though Cohen still welcomes requests to gussy up walls with good old-fashioned paper. Smaller jobs start at around $600, and big commercial ones can go all the way up to $100,000.
