Satya Twena had been producing her line of custom fedoras for three years at Makins Hats, a 40-year-old factory that counted Frank Sinatra among its customers, when it suddenly shut its doors. A month later, Twena had scraped together enough cash from family and friends and launched a Kickstarter to reopen the 5,000-square-foot space, inheriting all its vintage machinery and wooden hat blocks in the process. Her styles range from a classic aubergine fedora trimmed with black satin ribbon ($275) to a Mad Hatter look made with silk-lined white-beaver fur ($950) that a recent customer commissioned for his 40th-birthday celebration. The front serves as an appointment-only showroom, which Twena also rents out for hat parties: Guests can have bespoke toppers made on the spot, while knocking back cocktails, nibbling on finger foods, and listening to a live jazz trio (all included, starting at $4,250 for ten people).
