President-elect Obama is an elitist. We know for many reasons, not the least of which was that time the most elite lady in all of Christendom told us so. He went to two Ivy League schools, he’s thin, he likes smart people — the evidence goes on and on. But does that mean his personal taste is highbrow? As we are continuing to learn, maybe not. Much fuss has been made recently over the fact that Obama prefers to listen to a Zune, which is an MP3 device whose main claim to fame is that it’s not an iPod. And this week he was spotted on the treadmill at the gym listening to it while reading USA Today. When we thought about it, it’s kind of a trend with him. He uses an old-school BlackBerry with the scroll wheel on the side. And don’t even get us started on his nerd fashion: the high-waisted stonewashed peg jeans, the bulky sneakers, the pleated khakis (oh God the pleated khakis!). Is this really true? Does our young, hot, intellectual, cool future president have bad taste? Have we made him turn too populist? The other day we saw him wearing a polo shirt and it didn’t have a logo on it. What have we done??
