Perhaps at the request of the fans calling for his head at last night’s overtime loss to Toronto, the Rangers have fired coach Tom Renney, along with assistant coach Perry Pearn. (Renney’s replacement wasn’t immediately named.) After reaching the playoffs in his first three full seasons as Rangers coach, Renney’s club got off to a hot start this season, only to collapse in recent weeks, losing ten of their last twelve games. Not that firing Renney will instantly fix much: Even last night’s crowd (when they finally arrived, at least) seemed to flip-flop on whether it was Renney or GM Glen Sather they wanted out. But miraculously solving all their problems is what Sean Avery’s for, isn’t it? [NYP]
