There are blue whales off of Long Island that have been recorded singing in what scientists say is one of the closest performances to New York City we’ve ever heard. According to the Post, it “takes a whale 25 seconds to sing a single note, and it sings one every 70 seconds. Thus, it takes 20 minutes to sing a song.” Only males sing, but other blue whales can hear the songs up to 500 miles away, which is good because there aren’t that many of them left in the entire world. At 70 to 100 feet long, and with life spans of up to 150 years, it’s hard to imagine the human versions of the music they like to sing. So, of course, we tried!
