After watching the performance of Tareq and Michaele Salahi on the Today show, we are even more flummoxed as to how they got past the Secret Service. They were about as convincing as a conversation by the pool on The Hills. Denying that they had ever sought money for interviews, the couple said they decided to talk to Matt Lauer for free. They also denied a report out this morning that they’d previously crashed a Congressional Black Caucus dinner at the White House and been escorted out. “Our lives have been destroyed, everything we worked for, for me, 44 years, just destroyed,” Michaele said somberly. “We were invited, not crashers. There isn’t anyone who would have the audacity or poor behavior to do that. The White House — it is THE house. No one would do that.”
Not even getting into reports that e-mails with a Pentagon official led them to believe that they were invited, the couple refused to say one thing about why they turned up. “We respect [the Secret Service] timeline,” Tareq said when Lauer asked directly who invited them. “We’ve turned over documentation to them.” In other words, they’re not going away anytime soon. “We’re going to be coming up to New York, sitting on your couch and we’re going to show you documentation from e-mails, that you’ll get a chance to see,” Tareq vowed, clumsily evading another question about who invited them. “Based on the timeline, I think the American public is going to be extremely surprised with all the details that went from beginning to end into what was supposed to be a lovely, beautiful evening.” Dude, you also thought you could get away with crashing the White House. We’re not holding our breath for any big surprises.
