This morning, President Obama, Secretary of State Clinton, and Defense Secretary Gates officially announced a nuclear-arms deal the United States reached with Russia earlier this week. In the press conference, Obama noted that the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty would be signed on April 8 in Prague, and championed it as a step toward eliminating nuclear weapons entirely — something the administration says is a goal. Another goal, apparently, is getting back to something that sort of fell by the wayside in the health-care-reform debate. “I look forward to continuing to work closely with Congress in the months ahead,” Obama said, according to Politico. “There is a long tradition of bipartisan leadership on arms control.” He’ll meet with John Kerry and Dick Lugar soon to demonstrate how the administration will be “consulting senators from both parties as we prepare for what [he hopes] will be strong, bipartisan support to ratify the new START treaty.” Oh, Republicans! We forgot about them. So, Obama, you think they can say “yes” to things after all?
