Discovering, and laughing at, each successive crazy thing Delaware senate candidate Christine O’Donnell has said in past interviews is like shooting buffalo from your train for sport, as they used to do back in the day. At first you’re like, “Wow, that was fun, shooting that buffalo.” But there are more buffalo than you ever imagined there could be. They are so plentiful, and such easy targets, that you grow tired of shooting them. Eventually, you can’t even be bothered to shoot even the biggest, fattest buffalo ambling right beside the tracks; it is no longer enjoyable or gratifying.* Well, we’re getting there with regards to Christine O’Donnell, who has left the most extensive trail of embarrassment of any major party candidate in recent memory. Buuut we’re not there yet.
So, here’s another crazy thing about her: Back in the nineties, at a time when she apparently gave interviews all day, every day, O’Donnell thought that the Clintons may have murdered White House counsel Vince Foster, who had committed suicide. It’s a favorite conservative conspiracy theory, one that was investigated and disputed by none other than Kenneth Starr. Here she is on C-SPAN in 1996:
“I think it’s very interesting that President Clinton has come on a lot more charges and a lot more serious charges than what Newt Gingrich is being charged on, yet we’re not making as big of an issue, we’re not forcing that he go to trial,” said O’Donnell. “We’re not giving people like Paula Jones a fair trial, we’re not giving the case of Vincent Foster a fair trial — when there is a lot more empirical evidence that Clinton is involved in wrongdoing.” …
Yep, wouldn’t want to go on any witch hunts now, would we? Okay, this is still fun.
* We have no idea whether buffalo hunting ever became tiresome. Personally, we wouldn’t have done it to begin with, although one never knows what morals one would have in a different time period.
