So far, former Utah governor and ambassador to China Jon Huntsman has routinely polled at the very bottom of the GOP field. So why do members of the media seem to be so infatuated with him? Because he’s the type of level-headed, courteous Republican candidate who said this in his official announcement speech this morning in New Jersey:
“We will conduct this campaign on the high road. I don’t think you need to run down anyone’s reputation to run for president. Of course we’ll have our disagreements. That’s what campaigns are all about. But I want you to know that I respect my fellow Republican candidates. And I respect the president of the United States. He and I have a difference of opinion on how to help a country we both love, but the question each of us wants the voters to answer is who will be the better president, not who’s the better American.”
On the whole, however, the announcement was hardly flawless. On the press passes handed out to members of the media, Huntsman’s first name was spelled, incorrectly, with an H, and the location of the announcement was identified as New York instead of New Jersey. Finally, the press corps was somehow herded onto initially led to a plane bound for Saudi Arabia instead of one traveling to New Hampshire.
