For a few days Anthony Weiner has been telling friends that he’d wait until his wife, Huma, returned home from an international trip with her boss, Hillary Clinton, before he decided what to do about his disgraced career in Congress. She came back yesterday, and this morning the Times reports that after “long discussions” with her, Weiner is now telling friends he’s decided to resign. In part it was the much-reported pressure from his Democratic colleagues that sealed the deal — even today a meeting was planned to discuss stripping him of his committee assignments, a move that would remove much of his power in Congress. Could the great national nightmare of Weinergate be finally on the wane?
