Weekly Standard editor and Republican operative Bill Kristol has been trying hard to draft a new Republican candidate into the presidential race. In January, he started imploring Paul Ryan to jump into the race. Ryan begged off. Kristol’s eye wandered to Indiana governor Mitch Daniels. Daniels, too, turned him down. Kristol even suggested that Marco Rubio could perhaps enter the race. Not even a whiff.
By August, Kristol was writing anguished, pleading poems to the candidates spurning him. The latest, desperate effort involved him working publicly and behind the scenes to draft Chris Christie into the race.
Now Christie’s also out, and Kristol has compiled the worst draft record since Matt “Fire” Millen.
