Thirty non-union employees in the New York Times newsroom, preferably high-paid managers, are being asked to take a buyout package by January 24, the paper announced today. “There is no getting around the hard news that the size of the newsroom staff must be reduced,” said editor Jill Abramson. “I hope the needed savings can be achieved through voluntary buyouts but if not, I will be forced to go to layoffs among the excluded staff.” With Newsweek and The Daily both down, maybe the media winter redux really is upon us.
