Subway Riders Will Be Reminded to ‘Stand Away From the Platform Edge’ More Often

NEW YORK - FEBRUARY 23: A New York City Subway train pulls away from a station on February 23, 2010 in New York City. Najibullah Zazi, a former airport shuttle driver, pleaded guilty Monday to plotting to blow up New York City subways. Zazi, who grew up in New York and lived in Colorado, pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit murder in a foreign country, conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction and to providing material support for a terrorist organization. Zazi, 25, faces a life prison sentence without parole at sentencing in June. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

There’s not much the MTA can do to prevent subway-pushing incidents like the two that ended in the deaths of Ki Suk Han and Sunando Sen this December besides encouraging passengers to be more aware of their surroundings. So, they’re increasing the frequency of the already-familiar order to, “Please stand away from the platform edge.” Most numbered lines (and the L) will hear the alert every time a train approaches and twice more every fifteen minutes, though many other lines will only hear it once every fifteen minutes. Sadly, the new system got off to an inauspicious start yesterday as a man was struck by a northbound train passing through the Church Street B/Q station.
