At least one person was shot this morning at Taft Union High School in Kern County, California, about 120 miles north of Los Angeles, according to officials. Additional reports put the total number of victims at two, with one person airlifted to a local hospital and another suffering minor injuries and refusing treatment, but information is still scarce. “We have a suspect in custody,” said sheriff’s department spokesperson Ray Pruitt, who added that a shotgun was believed to be used in the attack, around 9 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. Taft reportedly has a uniformed sheriff’s officer on patrol “before, during and after school.”

Update: According to a law enforcement press conference, the school’s designated officer could not make it to work today. A teacher was said to have talked down the 16-year-old gunman after he shot his first victim and attempted to shoot another with a 12-gauge shotgun. “The teacher saved many lives,” said Sherriff Donny Youngblood.
