Two months after the Newtown massacre, officials have offered no explanation of Adam Lanza’s motive or his reasons for targeting Sandy Hook Elementary school, but now CBS News claims to have the answer. According to “two officials who have been briefed on the Newtown, Conn., investigation,” Lanza was obsessed with Anders Breivik, the Norwegian man who killed 77 people in July 2011, and saw him as competition. The officials claim that Lanza hoped to kill even more people than Breivik, and picked the school because it was the “easiest target” with the “largest cluster of people.” While Breivik’s rampage ended with his surrender, Lanza killed himself as police arrived on the scene, though he reportedly fired several shots at officers in the parking lot before turning the gun on himself.
According to a new profile of the Lanza family in the Hartford Courant, police found “thousands of dollars worth of graphically violent video games” in the home, and are still investigating what role they might have played in the shooting. CBS News’s sources claim that there’s evidence Lanza was acting out fantasies from the games, and each death increased his “score.”
Connecticut police quickly denied the CBS News report, and pointed out that it doesn’t name a single source. “The whole story is inaccurate,” State Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said. “The motive has not been determined. This is all coming from unnamed sources. It’s all speculation. It’s hideous.”
