NYPD, Feds Can’t Agree on How to Screen Huddled Masses

The large tent in Battery Park that housed the security facility for visitors to the Statue of Liberty since 9/11 was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy, and officials have taken the opportunity to start fighting over how tourists should been screened before visiting the landmark. Crain’s New York Business reports that the NYPD would like to continue having visitors wait on long lines to pass through metal detectors in Battery Park before boarding the ferries, but federal officials have suggested only screening Liberty Island visitors who want to go inside the statue, or moving the screening facility to Ellis Island. Both islands have been closed since the storm, and won’t reopen until local and federal officials can reach an agreement on security procedures.
