Mohammed Himon, the taxi driver who jumped the curb in midtown yesterday, mangling the legs of a 23-year-old British tourist, is not facing criminal charges as of now. “The investigation is going forward. Collisions, accident investigations take some time. It takes some time to do that and reconstruct the scene,” said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. (The Post reports that the NYPD has obtained security footage.) As for the victim, Sian Green, her father said, “She is in recovery now, and they have had to amputate what’s left of her foot,” while her other leg is reportedly in bad shape, too.
It might have been much worse if not for the assistance of a colorful cast of witnesses, including the famous Dr. Oz, who tended to Green’s wounds. “She was in pain, beyond pain,” said the plumber who used his belt to “stop the leak” of her bleeding legs.
A cyclist who was also hit blamed the driver. “The hood of his car was so close to me, I could touch it,” he told the Post. “I told him to stop, he gets angry, he honks his horn, and he accelerates, and that’s it—I’m on the hood of the car, and the woman is under his car.”
So far, Himon, who was not authorized to drive that specific cab, has been fined between $100 and $350, but criminal charges, including felonies, have not been ruled out. (The NYPD, however, has a notoriously difficult time holding drivers responsible, even in fatal accidents.) “I feel really, really bad,” Himon said at the scene. “Actually, I can’t even remember it. It happened really quick. I was very upset. I am praying to Allah for her that she is getting better. Please pray for her and me.”
