Barred from pleading guilty or arguing that he was defending the Taliban, admitted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan has given up. After prosecutors called 89 witnesses, Hasan, who is representing himself, called none and said today, “The defense rests.” He’ll have a chance to give a closing statement tomorrow, but who knows? Hasan is charged with killing thirteen people and faces the death penalty, which seems to be what he wants. “I’m paraplegic and could be in jail for the rest of my life,” Hasan said in a mental-health evaluation that he leaked from 2010. “However, if I died by lethal injection I would still be a martyr.”
