Scenes From New Jersey’s First Same-Sex Weddings

After the New Jersey Supreme Court decided on Friday to allow same-sex marriages to go ahead as planned on Monday, seven couples eager to join the ranks of the betrothed lined up at Newark’s city hall to have Mayor Cory Booker marry them just after midnight. The Supreme Court is still due to hear arguments in January over whether to permanently allow gay marriage, as Gov. Chris Christie’s administration appeals a ruling by a lower court. But it refused to overturn that court’s decision that the state should start allowing the weddings immediately. Aside from a heckler who reportedly shouted “this is unlawful in the name of god” when Booker asked for objections, it sounds like the ceremonies went pretty smoothly.
