Earlier this year, Yankees COO Lonn Trost defended the team’s controversial new ticket policy by explaining that premium-ticket holders don’t like it when someone buys a seat for less money than they spent. Explained Trost: “And quite frankly, the fan may be someone who has never sat in a premium location.” And so on Last Week Tonight this past Sunday, John Oliver promised to sell prime opening-week Yankees tickets to viewers for a quarter each if they tweeted at him with the hashtag #IHaveNeverSatInAPremiumLocation and a photo of what they’d wear to the game. On opening day, the tickets went to a couple of guys in Ninja Turtles costumes. The winners Wednesday night, for the team’s second home game? Two unicorns, and two Left Sharks, of Katy Perry–Super Bowl–halftime-show fame.
And while Trost claimed that premium-ticket holders would be bothered by newcomers unaccustomed to such seating areas, at least a few fans behind home plate posed for a photo with Oliver’s latest winners: unicorns Hannah Lee and Michelle Munera, and Left Sharks Ashley Lewis and Jennifer Sedgley.
The Yankees won the game, 16–6, and will finish off their series against Houston today.
