Edgar Bronfman Jr., the former boss of Universal Music, has resigned from the board of Vivendi Universal to focus on his takeover of Warner Music, the company said Thursday.
BRONFMAN AND his father, Edgar Bronfman Sr., told Vivendi chief executive Jean-Rene Fourtou of their resignations on Wednesday, the Paris-based French media and telecommunications company said in a statement.
“Edgar Bronfman Jr. decided to resign from the board and from his position within the company due to his participation in the acquisition of Warner Music,” the statement said. It did not say when the resignations would take effect.
A consortium led by the younger Bronfman last month beat Britain’s EMI Group PLC to buy Warner Music from Time Warner Inc. for $2.6 billion.
The Bronfman family sold Seagram Co. to Vivendi in 2000.
A consortium led by Edgar Bronfman Jr. attempted to buy back the film and television assets this year, but lost in the bidding to General Electric Co.’s NBC TV unit.
