Monday night on All In with Chris Hayes: Happy New Fiscal Year's Eve!
Monday night on All In with Chris Hayes: Happy New Fiscal Year’s Eve! Unfortunately, it looks like Americans will be getting a government shutdown at midnight instead of confetti and champagne. Congress is at a standstill, with the Democratically-held Senate voting Monday afternoon to strip the Republican-led House’s anti-Obamacare amendments from a funding bill that would keep the government running. The bill then bounced back to the House and lawmakers continued to blame the impending shutdown on the opposite side of the aisle. Last-minute deals began to swirl Monday afternoon, as House Republicans resorted to their “Plan C,” which would trade a continuing resolution for a one-year delay of the Obamacare individual mandate and a measure preventing the government from contributing to or subsidizing healthcare for many government workers. Robert Costa, Washington, D.C. Editor for the National Review, and Rep. Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina will join Chris Hayes to discuss how the budget battle got to this point.
MSNBC Reporter Suzy Khimm will also join Chris to explain what a shutdown would mean for Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, Social Security, and other vital services the federal government provides.
Also Monday, the Department of Justice announced it has filed a lawsuit against North Carolina over the state’s new voter ID law. According to the DOJ, the law violates the Voting Rights Act by intentionally discriminating against African Americans. This is the second voting rights lawsuit the DOJ has filed against a state since the Supreme Court’s ruling earlier this year striking down a key provision of the VRA.
Plus: Matt Welch, Editor-in-Chief of Reason magazine will join the table for more about Monday’s likely shutdown and House Speaker John Boehner’s game plan.
And don’t miss a special live second hour with Chris Hayes at 11p ET. Joy Reid, Ezra Klein, Tim Carney, Robert Costa, Matt Welch, Maddie Duppler and more will join Chris for the countdown to the shutdown.
