You’ve probably heard about Brooke Astor’s apartment: a prewar spread occupying two floors of 778 Park Avenue, with a terrace, fireplaces, an additional apartment for guests, and a famous library with red laquered bookcases and trimmed with brass detailing. Back in the day, Mrs. Astor entertained actors, Wall Street barons, politicians, foreign royalty, and New York society between its pastel-colored walls. More recently, she spent her last few nights sleeping there, allegedly in “torn nightgowns” in the “freezing cold” TV room on “a filthy couch that smells, probably from dog urine,” according to the court complaint filed by her grandson. But provided you have the $46 million that Brooke’s son (and alleged abuser) Anthony Marshall is selling the place for, well, we imagine that’s nothing a little feng shui couldn’t straighten right out.
