Remember back in January when Alexandra Kerry told us that she was somehow entangled with BlackBook founder Evan Schindler’s “Tar Art Media,” whatever it is? At the time, she was talking about doing a movie of Norman Mailer’s Naked and the Dead with Mailer’s son John. Well, now it turns out they’re making a magazine. An earth-conscious one! It will be called Tar and will be printed on recycled and “ecofriendly” paper. “Everything [about Tar Art Media] is connected by art, aesthetics and social consciousness,” Schindler told Mediabistro. “[Tar] is a high-concept publication with the ability to be sustainable.” And unpretentious, too! In addition to Kerry, Mailer, and Schindler, other names linked to the project include Julian Schnabel, Matthew Barney, Juergen Teller (all contributing to the first issue), former Domino features editor Zoe Wolff, and former Vogue associate publisher Susan Cappa. Bill Powers will be “artistic director.” According to Schindler, the mag is appealing because it is “beautiful but going deeper into people’s minds.” Oh, yeah, and it will be biannual, and each page will have a swatch of actual tar on it. Apparently so you can give your soul the appropriate loofah that it will need after you purchase something so insanely obnoxious.
