President Obama’s Interior secretary, Ken Salazar, is touring the Statue of Liberty today to determine whether to ease restrictions on access to the crown, which has been closed since 9/11, even after the base of the statue reopened. In addition to terrorism-related concerns, studies have shown that the structure is basically a death trap in the event of a fire or medical emergency.
