Abortion Debate’s Ultimate Flip-flopper Was Arrested at Sotomayor Hearing

If you were watching the first (and most boring) day of the Sonia Sotomayor confirmation hearings yesterday, you may have appreciated the brief moments of excitement that ensued when pro-life advocates in the room sporadically interrupted some senator’s wearisome opening statement — before being quickly escorted away under the fuming visage of Senator Patrick Leahy. But only last night was it revealed that one of those removed for disrupting the hearings, and later arrested, was none other than Norma McCorvey, better known to most people simply as Roe, of the celebrated/vilified 1973 Roe v. Wade case. As odd as it seems, the erstwhile trailblazer for abortion rights eventually became a staunch opponent of them after befriending members of Operation Rescue protesting outside an abortion clinic in the mid-nineties. Sotomayor better stay sharp when she exits the hearings — these folks are apparently extremely convincing.
