Angled Parking Spaces Throw Queens Streets Into Chaos

The Department of Transportation recently renovated a stretch of a Queens road with brand-new angled parking spots. Great, right? Those are so much easier to pull into. No. Not these. For safety reasons, the DOT decided to angle the spaces such that you have to back into them, because it’s “safer to back into an empty parking space than to back out of one into oncoming traffic,” a spokesman insists. Clearly this is too complicated a maneuver to expect anyone to perform. So who is to blame for the ensuing chaos on the streets? Smart people, for imposing their statistics and probabilities on a helpless populace. “The last time I was here, it was easy,” said some guy. “You just pulled right in. They should’ve used someone less educated to make this decision.” [NYDN]
