Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported on Twitter this morning that the Jets have named Mark Sanchez their starting quarterback. This is both logical and expected, as Sanchez has put up slightly better preseason numbers than Kellen Clemens, and even in the case of a dead heat, the nod was likely to go to the guy signed to the richest contract in team history. Part of you has to feel bad for Clemens, though. It was only about a year ago that he was expected to battle Chad Pennington for the starting job. Since then, the Jets have gone to incredible lengths to keep him from playing — and getting in some games while Sanchez became acclimated to the NFL was his last chance (barring an injury to Sanchez, of course). But such is the life of a pro football player. Now, to quote Will Leitch’s piece on Sanchez from our “Fall Preview” issue, it’s up to the shiny new franchise cornerstone to “get all that gloss off as soon as possible.”
