You’d be hard-pressed to find a Republican politician who isn’t playing up the whole “power to the people” thing these days, but Texas congressman Louie Gohmer a friend of the tea partiers, oddly enough apparently isn’t one of them. He proposed yesterday that the states convene a constitutional convention to repeal the 17th Amendment, which created direct elections for United States senators. Before it was ratified in 1913, senators were elected by state legislatures. This idea will be somewhat popular with state legislators, and nobody else. [Media Matters]
