President Obama is set to permanently reduce America’s nuclear arsenal by “thousands” of weapons, according to officials who have seen drafts of the administration’s Nuclear Posture Review. Obama will also commit to developing no new nuclear weapons (including ones advocated by the previous administration), but will spend billions on updating current weapons labs. He’ll stop short, however, of promising only to use nuclear weapons in an effort to deter nuclear attacks from others — despite pressure from the Democratic Party to do so. [NYT]
