It’s only been one day since Virginia governor Bob McDonnell declared April “Confederate History Month” without mentioning slavery even once in his proclamation. Now he’d like a mulligan. Earlier tonight McDonnell’s office put out a statement apologizing for the omission. In the statement, McDonnell acknowledges the evils of slavery and the prominent role it played in the Civil War, which he previously seemed to be denying. The statement also included the following text, which will be added to his proclamation.
WHEREAS, it is important for all Virginians to understand that the institution of slavery led to this war and was an evil and inhumane practice that deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights and all Virginians are thankful for its permanent eradication from our borders, and the study of this time period should reflect upon and learn from this painful part of our history…
