Arab-American Woman Wins Miss USA Pageant for (Likely) the First Time

Rima Fakih, a 24-year-old Lebanese immigrant from Michigan, was crowned Miss USA 2010 tonight. Fakih, who said she “celebrates both Muslim and Christian faiths,” is “believed to be” the first Arab-American and Muslim to become Miss USA, according to the Detroit Free Press. (Pageant officials told the AP that their records aren’t detailed enough to verify whether she is definitively the first Arab-American, Muslim, or immigrant to win the title.) Perhaps as notable is that Fakih managed to win despite nearly tripping on the train of her evening gown during the competition. [Lede/NYT]
