Damn, doesn’t it feel like just a few months ago that scrawny little Abdiwali Muse was hauled into court for his role in the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama? Well, actually, it was more than a year ago. Crazy. But if time went by quickly for us, we’re sure it crawled by for Muse, who’s been locked up in a Manhattan jail while the slow wheels of justice dealt with his case. Clearly, Muse didn’t have a hell of a lot else to do in those quiet, lonely hours besides think about the morality of hijacking ships and taking people hostage. Because yesterday, while pleading guilty to some of the charges against him in exchange for the others being dropped, Muse apologized.
“What we did was wrong,” Mr. Muse, speaking through an interpreter, told United States District Judge Loretta A. Preska in Manhattan. “I am very, very sorry for the harm we did. The reason for this is the problems in Somalia.”
Aw, that’s okay dude. We know Somalia is a terrible place. Honestly, nobody even cares about piracy anymore. We have car bombs and oil spills now. So you know what? You can go. Go on, get out of here, you little scamp! What? Oh, they’re telling us you have to go to prison for at least 27 years. Sorry, we thought we had moved on.
