President Obama is announcing a new fatherhood initiative today that will “rais[e] awareness about responsible fatherhood and working to re-engage absent fathers with their families,” but he already made father-related news yesterday. No, he does not have another kid on the way. That would be torture. Instead, in a first for a sitting president, Obama gave a shout-out to gay fathers in his Father’s Day proclamation. “Nurturing families come in many forms,” Obama’s proclamation read, “and children may be raised by a father and mother, a single father, two fathers, a stepfather, a grandfather, or caring guardian.”
Unprecedented though it may be, it’s 2010, and the endorsement of two-father families is hardly earth-shattering, especially since Obama said the same thing about “two mothers” last month. Unless you ask David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network, who thinks the words could “come back to haunt” Obama.
