Christin Munsch, a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at Cornell University, found that men who are financially dependent on their wives or live-in girlfriends are five times more likely to cheat than those who made the same amount as their significant other. Some people may read these results as evidence that American masculinity is too fragile to sustain a financial power dynamic women have had to adjust to for centuries. But we see it differently. What better way to say “Thanks for supporting our lifestyle!” than making sure your benefactor has less to do once she gets home? Munsch ponders the fallout for freeloaders: “It’s not exactly rational. If you’re economically dependent on someone, you probably shouldn’t cheat on them.”
