Five Algerian men were taken into custody by counter-terrorism officers this morning over a suspected threat to Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the UK. Although the suspects are Algerian, sources tell Sky News that the plot did not originate overseas. Scotland Yard says it hasn’t found any hazardous items. A spokesperson for the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales said the Pope’s itinerary will stay as scheduled: “The Pope is enjoying a wonderful visit, warmly welcomed wherever he goes.” [Sky News via Drudge]
