Darius McCollum has had an eventful 30 years, what with getting arrested 26 times for stealing trains and subways. As with most obsessions, it started early, when McCollum, then 15 years old, “commandeered” an E train and drove to the World Trade Center in 1981. But for his 27th arrest, the locomotive lover decided to do things a little differently. After discovering an empty bus at a maintenance facility in Hoboken, McCollum found the key in the ignition and decided to head east during rush hour. As with all of his prior arrests, no humans or vehicles were harmed. McCollum’s mother, Elizabeth, was surprised that her son, who suffers from Asperger’s, decided to diversify. “He loves trains more than anything else — buses are his second choice,” she told the Daily News. “He loves planes, too, but he hasn’t been able to get on one of those yet.”
