The Pentagon has agreed to stop enforcing its “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which bars gays from openly serving in the military. Earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips issued an injunction to the military to “immediately … suspend and discontinue any investigation, or discharge, separation, or other proceeding, that may have been commenced under ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’” This ruling came as result of a federal lawsuit against Defense Secretary Robert Gates on behalf of the Log Cabin Republicans. Yesterday Obama instructed his Justice Department to request a stay of the order, to delay implementation. Still, the Pentagon announced yesterday through a spokesman that in the meantime it “will of course obey the law,” and will cease investigations and discharges of gay servicemen and -women serving openly.
