This Weekend’s Crime Wave: Gunfights in 4 Out of 5 Boroughs

The city’s 15.8 percent rise in murder took the form of a 24-hour crime wave this weekend in at least six separate shootouts covering Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Juan Torres, owner of the Lucky Grocery & Deli on Merrick Boulevard in Queens, was shot in the head trying to defend one of his siblings from an armed robbery. More than a decade ago, Torres’s brother was killed in a deli robbery in Brooklyn. Caribbean-born policewoman Feris Jones, who works out of a crime lab in Queens, identified herself as a cop and then shot an armed robber in the leg at a hair salon in Clinton Hill, where the twenty-year veteran of the force, known to her admiring neighbors as “Jonesy,” was trying to get her hair done. Can someone give this woman her own procedural?
