According to WikiLeaks cables published in Canada’s National Post today, an American diplomat in Ottawa noted: “The level of anti-American melodrama [in Canada] has been given a huge boost … as a number of programs offer Canadian viewers their fill of nefarious American officials carrying out equally nefarious deeds in Canada, while Canadian officials either oppose them or fail trying … an indication of the kind of insidious negative popular stereotyping we are up against in Canada.” Another cable noted that the U.S. was not a popular topic of discussion during the 2008 Canadian elections, and, according to one American diplomat: “This likely reflects an almost inherent inferiority complex of Canadians vis-a-vis their neighbor.” [Reuters Canada]
