The U.S. Coast Guard has cordoned off a 110-yard area of Gravesend Bay, following the October discovery of 1,500 artillery shells dating back to World War II. Believed to have dropped into the bay during a military accident in 1954, the shells will remain until deemed safe enough to move. The area of the bay near the remains of Fort LaFayette will be off limits to boaters and divers until at least June. [Brooklyn Blog/NYP]
