British authorities finally have man, myth, and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in custody, but what does this mean for America? Ironically, not much. Assange’s arrest today on a Swedish warrant for alleged rape may complicate any attempts to charge him in the U.S. for releasing all those embarrassing and important classified documents. If Britain turns Assange over to Sweden, the U.S. would have to begin a difficult extradition process with that country that won’t necessarily pan out. Sweden, known for protecting asylum seekers, has an extradition treaty with the U.S. that doesn’t cover political or military crimes.
