Mark Kelly Has Made His Decision: Space

Wife or space? It’s one of the great debates of our time, or at least of the past couple of days. An unscientific survey of this post’s comments yesterday finds opinion pretty much evenly divided. On the one side are those who say Mark Kelly, astronaut husband of Gabby Giffords, should forgo April’s Endeavour mission, its last ever, because his wife needs him by her side, space is pretty dangerous, and it’s not like he’s never been before anyway. On the other side are those who believe that Giffords will be fine without Kelly for a couple of weeks (especially by April), she probably wouldn’t want him to miss it anyway, and also, it’s space! He’s not going skiing in Aspen, he’s delivering an Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer to the International Space Station … in space!

It’s a tough call, but according to reports, Kelly, no doubt after thoroughly discussing the matter with his wife, will announce at a NASA press conference today that he has chosen space.
