In a move that seems to portend lots of nutty states’ rights defenses to come, Kentucky senator Rand Paul was the lone dissenter in a 96-1 vote yesterday that criminalized the practice of pointing lasers at airplanes, which “can cause blindness and plane wrecks if pointed at a pilot’s windshield.” Tell us why, Rand Paul:
“I think that it is a bad idea to point lasers at pilots,” Paul told The Daily Caller. “There are a lot of states that already have laws, and I think the states ought to take care of it.”
Get used to this sort of thing it’s in the genes. In June of last year, the Times reported that Rand’s dad, Ron known as “Dr. No” by his colleagues led all congressmen in casting sole dissenting votes in the House, with 33. The next closest was Alaska’s Don Young, with seven.
