Rand Paul Is Just Against All Federal Laws Now

In a move that seems to portend lots of nutty states’ rights defenses to come, Kentucky senator Rand Paul was the lone dissenter in a 96-1 vote yesterday that criminalized the practice of pointing lasers at airplanes, which “can cause blindness and plane wrecks if pointed at a pilot’s windshield.” Tell us why, Rand Paul:

“I think that it is a bad idea to point lasers at pilots,” Paul told The Daily Caller. “There are a lot of states that already have laws, and I think the states ought to take care of it.”

Get used to this sort of thing — it’s in the genes. In June of last year, the Times reported that Rand’s dad, Ron — known as “Dr. No” by his colleagues — led all congressmen in casting sole dissenting votes in the House, with 33. The next closest was Alaska’s Don Young, with seven.
