Tunisia’s Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi announced his resignation yesterday, following a wave of new protests. Critics accused Ghannouchi of being to close to Tunisia’s former government, the one toppled last month, and of failing to enact any reforms. Ghannouchi has been the prime minister of the country since 1999, and after President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali resigned on January 14 amid uprisings that inspired those in Egypt, Ghannouchi said he planned to guide the country until elections expected in July. “My resignation will provide a better atmosphere for the new era,” he said. “My resignation is in the service of the country.” Ghannouchi restated the government’s pledge to hold elections to replace Ben Ali by July 15.
