FBI director Robert Mueller is stepping down in September, when his ten-year term expires, and Senator Chuck Schumer believes his friend, NYPD commissioner Raymond Kelly, is the right guy for the gig. “I think the country needs him,” Schumer said. “Ray Kelly is a world-class choice, and he’s at the top of the list, whether it’s fighting terrorism, drug crime or street crime. He’s the preeminent law enforcement person in the country. He knows more about this than anyone.” Schumer said he’ll “strenuously advocate” for Kelly to both the Justice Department and the White House, even though the senator said he hasn’t spoken to Kelly about the idea yet. So he might want to do that first. [NYDN]
