What the Secret Service Said After Ronald Reagan Was Nearly Assassinated

On March 30, 1981, in an effort to impress Jodie Foster — because this is the kind of thing chicks love — John Hinckley tried to kill President Ronald Reagan outside of the Washington Hilton. Today, for the first time, the Secret Service has released the audio of their radio transmissions immediately following the assassination attempt, replete with all the cool code-word lingo that the Secret Service is known for. You can hear the lead agent initially declare Reagan (“Rawhide”) unharmed, and order the limo (“Stagecoach”) to go back to the White House (“Crown”). Not long after, though, Reagan coughed up blood, and he was rerouted to the hospital. The new instructions: “Go to George Washington, fast.”
